Missourians for Responsible Transportation is pleased to announce a new addition to the team: Michael Kelley will serve as the organization’s new Policy Director!

“I’m incredibly excited to serve in this role,” Michael shared. “It’s an honor and a privilege to work with our partner organizations and communities across the state to build a transportation system that is safer, healthier, and more economically vibrant.”

Michael is a familiar face with MRT and in the broader transportation advocacy realm. After joining MRT’s partner organization BikeWalkKC in 2017, he worked his way up the ranks and became policy director in 2021. Over the next four years, he led the organization’s efforts to advocate for the policies, plans, and projects that expanded transportation options across the bi-state Kansas City metropolitan area and beyond. He is a nationally-recognized active transportation policy expert who led the push on numerous priorities, including:

  • Organizing and conducting a Community Transportation Academy to help everyday people better understand the transportation system and how to create change within it.
  • Developing a model Complete Streets policy that enabled multiple communities in Missouri and Kansas to adopt strong legislation of their own.
  • Supported the push for stronger distracted driving policy in the Missouri Legislature.
  • Advocated for key active transportation provisions with members of Congress.

In his new role, Michael will provide technical assistance to rural communities, support the advocacy efforts of partner organizations, and lead MRT’s policy and advocacy work at the state level.
