2026 MO Active Transportation Projects Underway

On June 18, 2026, Missouri Complete Streets [MOCS] Advisory Committee hosted a series of five presentations discussing some of Missouri's new active transportation projects of statewide significance:

Rail Transit + Trail Expansion on the Kansas City Riverfront (Presented by Eric Rogers, BikeWalkKC)

Statewide Significance

  • Major bike bridge developed along a new KC Streetcar extension
  • Active transportation at this location is crucial: connects to the world's first women's soccer stadium for the KC Current, which has 11,500 seats and only 2,000 parking spaces

Missouri's First Protected Bike Lane on a MoDOT Route in St. Louis (Presented by Corinne Austin, Trailnet)

Statewide Significance

  • MoDOT now has a precedent for developing concrete-protected bicycle infrastructure and protected intersections
  • Connects directly to growing St. Louis' regional trail system

Progress on Rock Island Trail State Park (Presented by Ron Bentch, MO State Parks)

Statewide Significance

  • Will connect to Katy Trail State Park to establish a 450-mile rail-trail loop to reach many communities across the state
  • Leadership of rural communities to apply for and achieve active transportation grants, and to self-fundraise required matching funds

Regional Trail Connectivity in the Ozarks (Presented by Ben Tegeler, Ozark Greenways + Jeremy Parsons, City of Ozark - Public Works)

Statewide Significance

  • Regional partnerships collaborated effectively to grow one of Missouri's largest active transportation networks
  • New trail bridge serves as a gateway for the City of Ozark, and shows that the city is proud of and values trail investment

Missouri's Largest Municipal Bike Park in Joplin (Presented by Paul Bloomberg, City of Joplin - Parks and Recreation)

Statewide Significance

  • Immediate huge visitation (including from many out-of-state visitors) demonstrates a proof-of-concept for recreation tourism
  • Incredible asset to encourage riders of all abilities to learn bicycle skills
