Your support is crucial for advocating to improve statewide active transportation planning and development in Missouri. This blog outlines three steps to move the needle:

  1. Learn about our proposal for a statewide active transportation plan
  2. Write a letter of support on behalf of your organization (use this template)
  3. Share your support in public comments to MoDOT (visit this link–active Jan. 14-Feb. 13, 2026 *note, MoDOT may postpone the opening date to February)

Statewide Active Transportation Plan Proposal

MRT is advocating for MoDOT to adopt a statewide active transportation plan to address critical gaps in safety, funding, connectivity, and policy for non-motorized transportation across Missouri.

A Missouri statewide active transportation plan would:

  • Improve safety and accessibility for all users
  • Align with federal and state policy goals
  • Provide a strategic, equitable, and cost-effective approach to transportation planning

Write a Letter of Support

If you represent an organization and support the need for a statewide active transportation plan, please write a letter of support. Letters will be consolidated and shared as part of the public comment period for MoDOT's 2026 Long-Range Transportation Plan update.

Letters of support from organizations across MO are calling for a statewide active transportation plan:

  • Advocacy Organizations
  • Elected Officials
  • Local Community Groups
  • Local Government Entities (City Offices; Commissions; School Districts)
  • MoDOT Planning Partners (MPO’s, RPC’s)
  • Small Businesses

Please send completed letters to jackson@movingmissouri.org by January 31, 2026.

Public Comments for MoDOT's Long-Range Transportation Plan [LRTP]: January 14-February 13, 2026

MoDOT is updating Missouri's Long-Range Transportation Plan in 2026, which "sets the 25-year vision for the state’s transportation system and establishes goals and objectives."

The LRTP will have a public comment period from January 14-February 13, 2026 (*note, MoDOT may postpone the opening date to February), and this is our opportunity to demonstrate the statewide interest and need for a Missouri active transportation planning framework.
